Scolari’s Food and Drug Company is not only an independent food store chain, but it also operates nineteen supermarkets in the California Central Coast and Northern Nevada. Ten of the company stores are situated in the communities of Gardnerville, Yerington, Fernly, Tonopah, and Sparks in Nevada. Each of the mentioned locations has one store. Some of the cities that host the California stores include San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach, Paso Robles and Santa Barbara. The company headquarters is in Nevada.
The Scolari family began the grocery trade in the year 1947 in California when Joie Scolari and his father opened the first Scolari’s grocery store. The original business later expanded to twelve stores prior to being sold to Lucky Stores, Inc. in 1979. An ownership interest and management control of chain stores in Reno, Nevada were purchased by the Scolari’s in the year 1982. The corporate name was changed to Scolari’s Warehouse, Inc. in 1987. The trade name of Scolari’s Food and Drug Company was adopted in 1991 so that it could reflect the stores’ nature accurately.
The Stores’ Nature
The Scolari’s stores differ in terms of sales volume, marketing strategy and size. Two of the company stores are traditional supermarkets, while four are box stores that operate under the Sak ‘n Save trademark, whose key emphasis is economy. The stores are characterized by different specialty sections including pharmacy, full service bakery, floral service and full service seafood/meat. All the stores of Scolari’s are not only clean, but also well stocked with a wide range of high quality merchandise.
