Naked Juice

Naked Juice is a natural juice manufacturing company based in California in the United States. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of PepsiCo Inc., and distributes its products to Canada, the United Kingdom, and all parts of the U.S. The products of the company are 100% natural without any added preservatives or artificial flavors.

Naked Juice was founded by Jimmy Rosenberg in 1983. The first production facility was his home in Santa Monica, California, where Rosenberg made all the juices himself using fresh fruit. He named his product ‘Naked Juice,’ as it did not contain any artificial colors or flavors. He packed the juices in bottles and sold them on the beach. The juice quickly became very popular, so Rosenberg signed an agreement with a local grocery store to sell the products commercially. The company soon expanded its distribution to Los Angeles, followed by the opening of more distribution centers in San Diego.

By 2000, the company was distributing its products to all parts of California. In 2000, the products of the company reached Connecticut, when a private equity firm bought Naked Juice. Thus, Naked Juice became Ultimate Juice Company. But, this change existed only for a very short period of time. Within a short time, the sales of the juice increased tremendously and due to this high demand, the firm decided to change its name back to Naked Juice Company.

In 2005, a new design was introduced for the packaging, making the company more popular than its competitor Odwalla, owned by The Coca-Cola Company. More distribution centers were opened in Seattle, Washington, and Sacramento, California. In 2007, PepsiCo, Inc. acquired the company. During that time, sales reached $150 million. In 2007, it introduced a new variety of juice with added probiotics. In February 2010, the headquarters of the company was moved from Azusa to Monrovia in California. The same year, it also started selling coconut water.

Today, Naked Juice distributes its products to 50 states in the U.S., and also to UK and Canada. The company has around 20 varieties of juice, which contain only fruits and vegetables.

Correction on the business origins of “Naked Juice”.

In January 1984, David Bleeden and Jimmy Rosenberg together co-founded “Naked Juice”.

It was during the early 1980s, Bleeden studied philosophy at UC San Diego, but his earnest passion at the time was music. After college, Bleeden played guitar in a band with fellow band member and friend, Jimmy Rosenberg. To financially survive and supplement their personal incomes, they both came up with the idea for Naked Juice which got its name because Bleeden and Rosenberghis often sunbathed naked.

The business idea for Naked Juice was conceived after Jimmy’s father saw an ad in the Wall Street Journal for a Juice King machine. After making the rounds to local coffee and donut shops, they found that there was a definite market for fresh juices and they set up shop in back of the Chipper Wish Hoagie Shop in Venice, Calif. The consumer demand for Naked Juice continually grew from this humble beginning as an entrepreneurial business venture. Gelson’s Market was their first big commercial customer, and four years later in 1988, Chiquita eventually bought out these business partners’ company taking over the Naked Juice Company.
