Boots Group is a chain of pharmaceutical stores that is located in the United Kingdom. The company has numerous outlets in both Ireland and Britain. It is the Alliance Boots’ subsidiary company. The head office of Boots Group is situated in Nottingham.
History
The history of Boots Group dates back to the year 1849 when it was established by John Boot. Jesse Boot helped his mother operate the family’s medicine shop after his father’s death. This shop was later renamed Boot and Co. Limited, in the year 1883. In 1888, it was rebranded Boots Pure Drug Company Limited. The company was sold to American-based United Drug Company in 1920. However, following difficult economic situations in North America, the company was sold to the British in 1933. By then, the company head was John Boot, who inherited the Baron Trent title from his dad.
During the 1960s, Boots expanded its market to include research as well as manufacture of drugs. In 1987, the company received the Queen’s Award to acknowledge its technical achievement. Boots has been expanding internationally. For instance, the company expanded to Canada and bought Tamblyn Drugs. In 1989, most Boot stores in Canada were changed to Pharma Plus. In 1998, the company diversified to dentistry. Laser-eye surgery services were sold to Optical Express in late 2004. It is also worth noting that the Boots Charitable Trust is funded by the company. This trust was founded in the 1970s and has been of great benefit to Nottinghamshire residents.
