Big LotsThis is a retail corporation that is based in Ohio and is one of the companies in Fortune 500. The company has numerous stores that spread across forty-eight states in U.S., as well as in Canada. The company has been known to sell a broad range of merchandise such as beverages, packaged foods, clothing, furniture, house ware and toys.

History

The history of Big Lots Chain dates back to 1967 following the formation of Consolidated Stores Corporation in Ohio. The first closeout store was opened in 1982 in Ohio and branded Odd Lots. A New Jersey closeout retailer was bought in 1983. Later on, the company came to an agreement to limit its use of the name Odd Lots and apply it to stores located solely in the Columbus area. Stores under the name Big Lots began being opened beyond the specified radius. The company started trading as an independent public company on the ASE in the year 1985. It then moved to the NYSE in 1986 where it traded under CNS symbol.

Most of the company stores are associated with furniture departments selling upholstered furniture including recliners, love seats and sofas. Some of the stores are smaller and sell a limited range of ready to assemble furniture and mattresses. Big Lots made an announcement in 2006 on its intention to change its NYSE ticker symbol to BIG from BLI. Late last year, the company made an announcement on its plan to exit the Canadian marketplace because of poor sales.
